Pure Pilates Instructors Attend Pilates Continuing Education

Pure Pilates instructors are required to take yearly Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses to maintain their certification status with Romana’s Pilates. Over the past weekend, Daria Pace, Granddaughter of Romana Kryzanowska hosted a gathering of Pilates teachers from around the world to learn from the best: Romana’s Pilates Grand Master Instructors, Sari Mejia Santo, Juanita Lopez and Cynthia Lochard shared their knowledge, skills & abilities in an educational and interactive format. Following the CPE, Karen also attended the Instructor Trainer meeting. Below is a picture from the CPE event.

Pilates for Men

img_Blog_PilatesMenI have been teaching Pilates for about 10 years now and I’m amazed at how many of my newest clients are men. In fact, there are days when all I teach are male clients. Recently my friend and fellow Pilates Instructor Mari Winsor was at my studio and she agreed that more men are taking Pilates. Reflecting on all this, I thought the best thing would be to write a blog about why men do or should be doing Pilates.

Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. As a frail child dedicated to improving his strength, he later became an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, and boxer. Joseph Pilates went on to become a nurse in England during WWI. During his internment, Pilates designed exercise equipment for injured soldiers by attaching springs to hospital beds. Joseph later began training wrestlers, skiers, gymnasts and boxers including Max Schmeling. Therefore, it is easy to understand that men have, and continue to benefit from Pilates.

Why Pilates
Women enjoy how Pilates tightens their core and flattens their abdominal muscles. With Pilates training, their posture improves and they look better in their dresses, on the beach and also perform better on the tennis court or golf course. Men, are obviously looking for an exercise that will also tighten their core and strengthen their abs, but I’ve found that the men who come into my studio also turn to Pilates to help them become better runners, bikers, golfers or simply better at a pick-up game of basketball. In fact, the increased flexibility one client experienced improved his golf swing so dramatically, that his golf partner is now a client as well!

Injury Prevention & Motivation
Many male clients of the studio have had a long history in the gym. Pumping iron they developed big, unbalanced and inflexible muscles. This physique worked for them when they were in their 20’s and 30’s, however a minor or nagging injury sent them to orthopedists, physical therapists and chiropractors who recommended they tone down their heavy lifting in favor of Pilates. South Florida High School football is known to be some of the most competitive in the country. The St. Thomas Aquinas football team has also used Pilates training to give their team an edge in strength and flexibility and injury prevention.

A Final Word
In truth, Pilates is for everybody and every body. I’ve taught 13 year old Olympic hopefuls, 20-something Olympic athletes (see my blog about the British Olympic Swim Team at Pure Pilates), as well as triathletes, professional baseball, football and basketball players. Mari Winsor, from Los Angeles, CA has taught many male celebrities such as Gary Shandling, Patrick Swayze, Samuel Jackson and Danny Glover. However, the mainstay of Pilates will always be men and women wanting to look better, feel better, increase their flexibility and adding strength to their bodies. So, if you want improved flexibility, coordination and posture – if you want to increase your core strength, address low back pain and muscular imbalances, and if you want to cross-train for other activities, give Pilates a try!

Pilates can help Parkinson’s Patients

I have been reading several really good articles on Pilates and Parkinson’s Disease. Since I’ve had several pilates clients with Parkinson’s, I decided it was best to make sure I knew all I could about Parkinson’s and how Pilates can help.

Parkinson’s is a degenerative disorder which inhibits a person’s ability to control movement. Its most common symptom includes tremors, slowness of movement, rigidity and poor balance.

Pilates movements are controlled and specific – sometimes moving the body only inches, but those small motions make a big difference for some people with Parkinson’s disease. With a growing number of pilates clients finding relief from their Parkinson’s symptoms, Pilates is proving to be effective in helping with the disease. I have found that increased core strength and improved flexibilty and balance is extremely helpful in countering the effects of Parkinson’s in some people.

The National Parkinson’s Foundation has performed studies that show exercise can ease the severity of Parkinson’s symptoms. Studies they conducted with Pilates participants say the exercises aren’t a strain, which makes pilates more approachable for Parkinson’s patients who don’t exercise at all. Also, some Parkinson’s patients struggle with depression and the studies indicated that exercise can help with that. Exercise is as much for the mind as the body and to feel like you can help yourself in some way is important.

I’ll end this blog with a quote from Joseph Pilates. “One of the major results of Contrology (Pilates) is gaining the mastery of your mind over the complete control of your body.”

Mari Winsor Workshop at Pure Pilates

Pure Pilates is excited to announce that fitness expert Mari Winsor, creator of Winsor Pilates which sold over 50 million workout videos will be in Fort Lauderdale on September 28 & 29, 2012. Mari will be teaching private or duet lessons and a Your Art of Contrology Workshop at Pure Pilates located at 6294 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale FL 33308.

Mari Winsor’s Bio
In 1990, Mari opened her first Pilates studio in Los Angeles, and introduced her innovative signature workout, “dynamic sequencing,” based on techniques developed by Joseph Pilates. Soon after, the highly visible bodies of musicians, professional athletes, and celebrities began to flock to her studio to be shaped, toned, and strengthened.

Eager to learn as much as she possible could about Pilates, in 1992, Mari began studying with Romana Kryzanowska, who trained with Joseph Pilates and took over his New York studio upon his death. After one year of intense study, Mari earned her certification in the true technique of Joseph Pilates. Mari continues to study with Romana to this day.

In 2003, Mari brought Pilates to a new level of public recognition when she released her first infomercial. The record-breaking success of the Winsor Pilates workout series and award-winning infomercials was unparalleled. Thirty videos later and over 50 million programs sold, Mari’s groundbreaking dynamic workouts have helped millions of Americans get the body they want making Winsor Pilates a household name.

Committed to sharing her knowledge and experience with the public, Mari has created an Online Winsor Pilates Fitness Club. She has co-authored three books: The Pilates Powerhouse; The Pilates Pregnancy: Maintaining Strength, Flexibility and Your Figure; and The Pilates Workout Journal: An Exercise Diary and Conditioning Guide. WHY ATTEND: Come attend this new and exciting Your Art of Contrology Workshop and/or Sessions taught by Mari Winsor. An overview of the Your Art of Contrology Workshop is below:

“It is a huge responsibility to take on the needs of a client’s body. They may want smaller thighs, a tinier waistline, and lifted buttocks, but we as Instructors of this fabulous Pilates exercise may see it differently. Miley Cyrus, when she came to see me, wanted all those cosmetic benefits Pilates is so famous for — I wanted to change her posture and strengthen her body. We are both getting what we want and she realizes how important posture, strength, balance, and flexibility are in the mix. It is a process though and that is where your art comes in. Teaching someone to control their body is not easy and no it is not just “built in” to the work. Both you and your client have to work together for it. If a client has trouble focusing you spend time bringing them back to simplicity. For me, the concept of resistance and counter-resistance from the powerhouse in every exercise we teach is most important. There is a common thread connecting all the exercises. Proper cuing tools are important to guide your clients in the right direction. How you touch someone or not can make a difference. We will be working together to gain a different and fresh perspective in lengthening the body in all directions from the powerhouse helping you and your clients connect body, mind, and spirit.” —Mari Winsor

WHY ATTEND: Come attend this new and exciting Decompression Workshop and/or Sessions taught by Mari Winsor. An overview of the Decompression Workshop is below:

“As of late I hear rumblings from instructors in other methods say Pilates is not good for the body because it compresses the spine and compromises the joints. I guess they have to think of something to say. In my mind, Pilates exercise is just the opposite. Looking at the reformer with an untrained eye, I can see where someone might make that uneducated guess…. of course we know differently. Every exercise that we do in our work fights gravity so to speak. Come and learn some different tools to pull your clients out of the powerhouse in all directions. As we age especially, problems of compression naturally start to occur. It is our job to help ourselves and our clients become successful in lengthening the muscles that support the joints and bones, creating more space in the body for better health, more flexibility, and of course, there are those fabulous cosmetic benefits, too!” —Mari Winsor
