The season is upon us — school zones are blinking, schedules are filling up, and holiday decorations are already on sale. Tick…tock…tick…tock…How do you possibly get it all done?!

The 6 Principles of Pilates will show you the way:

Centering ~ All movement begins and is sustained through the "POWERHOUSE"
Concentration ~ Intelligence, Intuition, Imagination, Will & Memory
Control ~ Complete coordination of the Body, Mind & Spirit
Precision ~ Work with Quality instead of Quantity
Breath ~ Rhythm of the breath and heartbeat sends fresh oxygen to the muscles
Flow ~ A full succession of exercises performed with vigorous dynamics

As we move speedily into a busy season, let’s not forget how important it is to make time for ourselves. The physical benefits of Pilates are well documented. The mental side of the equation is multi-faceted. Your results are achieved with an integrated combination of intelligence, intuition, memory, imagination, and willpower. Much like meditation, you will find yourself in a better place after your workout. As Joseph Pilates says,

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”

So for those who are dedicated to the practice, keep up the good work! You are inspiring to those around you and greatly appreciated by your family at Pure Pilates!

This is such a huge and positive step for Karen and her team! The Intermediate 1 Seminar with teacher trainer Keren Feingold was a huge success — culminating with apprentice, Ashley Coon, passing her Beginner test with flying colors! Pure Pilates is excited to announce that Kim Hamilton has joined the Pure Pilates Team as a Certified Instructor & Studio Coordinator!  In addition to teaching Pilates, Kim is also responsible for client relations; customer service; and managing the Pure Pilates Boutique.

Kim fell in love with Pilates in college. Upon graduation, she decided to pursue her passion and make it her career.  Unlike many instructors, Kim does not come from a dance background. Kim also noticed changes in her physique which was an added benefit! Kim believes that whatever your sport or level of physical activity you have, you'll notice how Pilates enhances it.Pilates continually inspires Kim, both mentally and physically. Just last year, Kim was finally able to do a backbend on her own! Kim has always been tighter in her upper body but it was something she had been working on in her own lessons, and she was finally able to accomplish it. This is something that Kim tries to pass along to her clients, whatever your goals are in Pilates, Kim will work together with you to accomplish them. Throughout her years of teaching, Kim has been privileged to work with clients from as young as 10 to 85. Kim also has a lot of experience in teaching clients with serious back issues and chronic conditions. All have been a pleasure to work with, I learn as much from my clients as they learn from me.

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. As a frail child dedicated to improving his strength, he later became an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, and boxer.

Joseph Pilates went on to become a nurse in England during WWI. During his internment, Pilates designed exercise equipment for his immobilized patients by attaching springs to hospital beds. This system became the foundation for his style of body conditioning. He brought this system to New York when he opened his first Pilates studio in 1926 and went on to create what is now known as the The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning.

Staying Fit in Fort Lauderdale

With summer beach and bathing suit season upon us, we thought it might be time for some fitness tips, so we reached out to our friend and fitness expert, Karen Winselmann, owner/instructor trainer at Pure Pilates, right here in the neighborhood.

TLBC: In your opinion, why is Broward County such a great area to live for staying fit?
Fort Lauderdale offers such diverse ways to stay in shape, it's hard to NOT find something you can enjoy. You can bike along the beach, join a running club, take a hike in the everglades or at a beautiful county park. You can swim, surf, skim board or paddle board in the Atlantic Ocean or take the kayak to the intracoastal. Alternately, we can play tennis or golf year-round. For indoor activities, there are some very nice gyms and one very exclusive boutique pilates studio!

TLBC: I’ve heard it said that the weather affords you no excuses when it comes to getting outside and being active: Do you agree with this?
Any south floridian knows that, in theory, we can exercise & stay fit year-round due to our climate. However, we need to be selective about when we workout outdoors. I cannot recommend anyone to run a marathon on a hot July afternoon. However, an early morning jog or bike ride in July is usually acceptable for someone who is fairly fit.

TLBC: There is a strong dance culture in South Florida: How does that impact people's fitness routines? Anything you personally do for fitness that involves dance?
South Florida does have a strong dance culture. Latin dance styles such as Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha Cha or the Argentine Tango are exciting and passion inspired movements which get your feet moving and your heart pounding. Latin dancing inspired the Zumba craze. However, in South Florida we also have a big Ballroom dance following possibly made popular due to TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars. Pilates has always attracted dancers and many of the very good Pilates instructors I know have a dance background including yours truly. I was Dance Major at Florida State University (Go Noles!) and have had season tickets to the Miami City Ballet since I graduated from FSU.

TLBC: The beach is a big part of our Fort Lauderdale scene. What activities are there to do on the Beach? Anything a little out of the ordinary that you enjoy?
To mix it up, I paddle board on calm days at the beach. On windy days, my son wind surfs, but I haven't tried that myself!

TLBC: South Florida is known for cutting edge fitness centers: Can you tell me some of the interesting things you have seen at fitness centers (boot camp, yoga, etc), and which ones you personally enjoy?
South Florida certainly has a huge variety of fitness centers capitalizing on the latest rage - be it Zumba or Ballet Barre or P90X. Many of these centers come on strong, get a solid following only to get boring or provide little fitness results and ultimately disappear from the scene. As you know, I run a boutique pilates studio in Fort Lauderdale called Pure Pilates and I feel it offers our population the best platform to get in shape and stay in shape. I teach pilates the same way Joseph originally taught it. Unfortunately, there are many others "pilates" programs out there with instructors that took shortened courses and teach something that Joseph would be embarrassed to know was referred to as "Pilates." To become certified, I took over 700 hours of training courses and I've taught over 15,000 hours of instruction to my clients.

TLBC: How do you find time for fitness in your busy schedule?
I have always been active and always been interested in staying fit. I wish to live a long and healthy life so I make time to workout everyday. Sometimes I teach Pilates for 8 hours a day, my voice is tired and I just want to relax, but when I do my workout, it helps energize me and I always feel better.

TLBC: Anything else you’d like to add?
Please feel free to visit my website and give Pure Pilates a try!

Pure Pilates Instructors Attend Pilates Continuing Education

Pure Pilates instructors are required to take yearly Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses to maintain their certification status with Romana’s Pilates. Over the past weekend, Daria Pace, Granddaughter of Romana Kryzanowska hosted a gathering of Pilates teachers from around the world to learn from the best: Romana’s Pilates Grand Master Instructors, Sari Mejia Santo, Juanita Lopez and Cynthia Lochard shared their knowledge, skills & abilities in an educational and interactive format. Following the CPE, Karen also attended the Instructor Trainer meeting. Below is a picture from the CPE event.

Pilates for Men

img_Blog_PilatesMenI have been teaching Pilates for about 10 years now and I’m amazed at how many of my newest clients are men. In fact, there are days when all I teach are male clients. Recently my friend and fellow Pilates Instructor Mari Winsor was at my studio and she agreed that more men are taking Pilates. Reflecting on all this, I thought the best thing would be to write a blog about why men do or should be doing Pilates.

Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. As a frail child dedicated to improving his strength, he later became an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, and boxer. Joseph Pilates went on to become a nurse in England during WWI. During his internment, Pilates designed exercise equipment for injured soldiers by attaching springs to hospital beds. Joseph later began training wrestlers, skiers, gymnasts and boxers including Max Schmeling. Therefore, it is easy to understand that men have, and continue to benefit from Pilates.

Why Pilates
Women enjoy how Pilates tightens their core and flattens their abdominal muscles. With Pilates training, their posture improves and they look better in their dresses, on the beach and also perform better on the tennis court or golf course. Men, are obviously looking for an exercise that will also tighten their core and strengthen their abs, but I’ve found that the men who come into my studio also turn to Pilates to help them become better runners, bikers, golfers or simply better at a pick-up game of basketball. In fact, the increased flexibility one client experienced improved his golf swing so dramatically, that his golf partner is now a client as well!

Injury Prevention & Motivation
Many male clients of the studio have had a long history in the gym. Pumping iron they developed big, unbalanced and inflexible muscles. This physique worked for them when they were in their 20’s and 30’s, however a minor or nagging injury sent them to orthopedists, physical therapists and chiropractors who recommended they tone down their heavy lifting in favor of Pilates. South Florida High School football is known to be some of the most competitive in the country. The St. Thomas Aquinas football team has also used Pilates training to give their team an edge in strength and flexibility and injury prevention.

A Final Word
In truth, Pilates is for everybody and every body. I’ve taught 13 year old Olympic hopefuls, 20-something Olympic athletes (see my blog about the British Olympic Swim Team at Pure Pilates), as well as triathletes, professional baseball, football and basketball players. Mari Winsor, from Los Angeles, CA has taught many male celebrities such as Gary Shandling, Patrick Swayze, Samuel Jackson and Danny Glover. However, the mainstay of Pilates will always be men and women wanting to look better, feel better, increase their flexibility and adding strength to their bodies. So, if you want improved flexibility, coordination and posture – if you want to increase your core strength, address low back pain and muscular imbalances, and if you want to cross-train for other activities, give Pilates a try!
