All of our superstar Bridge Apprentices passed their Beginner tests (CONGRATS!) and are enthusiastically working on intermediate exercises with all of their clients. March MATness!

The Mat.

Ooooooooohhh the Mat.

Did you know that the Mat is where the whole system started? This is true! Joseph Pilates first developed his system on the Mat with 34 classic exercises as illustrated in his book "Return to Life Through Contrology." These 34 exercises can be done daily and are a perfect "no excuse" workout to do at home or when traveling. For teachers, the mat work is such a wonderful gift to help them stay committed to their own practice. So we asked our instructors which of the 34 Mat exercises they love and why...

Karen -- Boomerang
"Boomerang is an advanced Pilates exercise that comes near the end of the classical Pilates mat order. I love this exercise because it is an opportunity to put many skills together in one flowing sequence of moves — it is a combination of both the Roll Over and the Teaser using: balance, control with fluid movements."

"I am very tight in my lower back and the Roll Over gives me such an incredible stretch and release."

"It's one of those exercises that brings the whole system together."

The Advanced Seminar was this past weekend -- HOLY COW! You've probably noticed the buzz around the studio as our Apprentice Extraordinaires ferociously self practice, observe and teach as much as humanly possible. Aside from learning a plethora of advanced system exercises, they were also tested on their Intermediate II competency. GUESS WHAT?! They all PASSED -- but are you even surprised?

Pilates is Resistance Training which has been proven to increase Bone Density, Muscle Mass and Metabolism. Pilates all day!

Stop. Take a deep Breath and find your Center. Focus. Concentrate... And life will Flow Precisely as you wish.

The 6 Principles of Pilates are so important because mastery of these principles in your own practice are not held captive in your studio of choice. They live in you and are carried out into this crazy, hectic world which all too often can feel like a hurricane of stress and worry.

Stop. Take a deep Breath and find your Center.

Pilates is a beautiful system of exercises that build on each other like the foundational bricks of a sacred sanctuary. But they never get easier. Anyone who has done Pilates long enough can attest to that. In fact, challenge yourself this month to go back to the basics. Find ways to deepen the work in exercises like The Hundred on the Mat or The Twist & Reach on Reformer or…..THE AB SERIES!!!

Let go of what you already have programmed, in your brain and body, about these exercises and focus on the principles — Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, Flow — how is the exercise helping you achieve these goals?

Let’s take a look at the Pilates exercise: The Hundred for example:

~ Your legs are long, straight, squeezing tight and hugging the midline (Centering)
~ The Powerhouse is staying deeply engaged while you listen to the cues of your instructor (Concentration)
~ Your legs stay reaching long at 45 degrees — perhaps they lower an inch (Control)
~ Your torso is planted sturdy into the mat; belly pulling in towards the spine; your head, neck and shoulders are stable — no bobbleheads (Precision)
~ Inhale 2,3,4,5 and Exhale 2,3,4,5 (Breath)
~ Your arms are reaching long and away from the shoulders — pumping at hip height or above with vigor from the wings (Flow)

With A Little Help From My Friends

Pilates was designed to be mastered and enjoyed One-on-One. The individualized attention a client receives from their instructor amplifies the potential for success and growth. But let’s be honest….not everyone can afford private Pilates instruction. Also, some people enjoy the healthy competition that is sparked in group classes. Being accountable to others is often the extra push a person needs to get their tush in gear. What’s that? You’re tired of only doing Mat/Tower or Reformer exercises?! You miss working on other equipment like the Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Ladder Barrel but can’t afford privates anymore…NO PROBLEM! Duet Sessions are the perfect way to experience more apparatus without breaking the bank. So how does it work? How do you find a Pilates Pal? Matchmaking can be challenging but we are always happy to help find the perfect partnership. Just inform Avél, Studio Coordinator, that you are interested in signing up for Duets, indicating your preferred day and time, and she will do her best to find you a partner (keeping skill level in mind, of course). Alternatively, if you are new to Pilates, and have a friend that is also interested in starting up a practice…PERFECT! The friends that do Pilates together, stay together.

New Year, New Instructor & New Class!

Hello Pilates Purists,

We’re so excited to be back in action after a wonderful holiday and are busier than ever. And so to accommodate all of our current and prospective clients, we have hired another fantastic teacher. Her name is Teresa Trunzo and she is the perfect fit for Pure Pilates!

Teresa was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and at age fourteen moved to South Florida. As a result of being in the sunshine state with beautiful beaches, warm weather and endless sunny skies, outdoor activities like bike riding and roller skating were a common past time. Teresa’s first teaching experience started in 1984 with Richard Simmons Anatomy Asylum in Deerfield Beach, FL. The emphasis was on a total body workout in addition to nutrition counseling for all body types and fitness levels.  Teresa was introduced to authentic Pilates in 2009. At that time she became aware of the benefits of this form of exercise and how it can enhance your body and everyday living. She successfully completed the Romana’s Pilates® Instructor Training Program in 2013. Teresa is always learning and continues to share her passion of Pilates and the benefits to the mind, body and spirit with the community.

Teresa is available for Privates, Duets, and Trios —
Mondays, Wednesdays, & Saturdays from 8 am - 12 pm
Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm

In addition, we are excited to announce that Pure Pilates has started its first ever Reformer 1 - Beginner Class which will be taught by Teresa (please note: not for first time clients). The weekly Reformer 1 Class — Beginner class schedule is:

Great news: the rate for all classes @ Pure Pilates is $25/class with an Auto-Renew package of 8 Classes ($200). This package is good for 1 year from purchase date (FYI, the single class rate is $30).

A December To Remember...

As 2015 comes hurriedly to an end, let’s not forget to take a moment to reflect on the past year with all of its valuable challenges and memorable experiences....deep breath in, deep breath out. And now that we’ve soaked that all in, we can look toward the new year with curiosity and excitement for all of the wonderful new adventures in store!

Pure Pilates is definitely looking forward to an exciting 2016:
  • Our Apprentice, Ashley, will be completing her program in January with just enough time to usher in the next wave of budding Pilates professionals!
  • Due to the holiday festivities and exciting renovations: new flooring, new paint, and the addition of more apparatus -- the studio will e closed from Wednesday, December 23, 2015 - Sunday, January 3, 2016.  We will re-open on Monday, January 4, 2016.
  • The second cycle of Alycea Ungaro’s Real Pilates Teacher Training Program starts with the Beginner Weekend Seminar at Pure Pilates on March 4-6, 2016. For more information on this comprehensive program, check out our "Careers" page at

Classically trained and certified in Romana’s Pilates, Johnny has spent the last 2 decades honing and sculpting his craft into the powerhouse it is today. Licensed in Massage Therapy, Gyrotonics, Yamuna Body Rolling and more, Johnny seeks to consume all things health & body and looks forward to bringing his vast experiences to Pure Pilates. In addition to this wonderful news, we’re thrilled to bring back — by popular demand — our Men’s Tower Class! The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning is perfect for injury prevention and body toning. Pilates will improve your golf swing, improve your form in the weight room, sculpt your abs, and loosen tight shoulders & hips. Although men are welcome in all our classes, this special class is for men only and is designed with men’s specific needs in mind. These classes will be lead by Johnny on Mondays & Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. All classes are $30 p/single lesson with non and auto-renew packages available.
